Because there are some modern-day foods that will be completely eliminated when following this diet, it may be hard for someone just starting out on this diet plan to experience success. Having an easy guideline with a detailed list of what to eat and what not to eat would make this transition between current eating habits and Paleo diet much smoother.

Food Categories

The main categories of food allowed on the Paleo Diet are meats, fish and shellfish, fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds. Each of these categories contains an abundance of variety to choose from when planning meals. Keep in mind that foods containing salt, sugar, or that have been processed must be eliminated. For example, under the meats category, the grass-fed beef roast would be acceptable but sausages would not. That’s because sausages contain both salt and sugar and are made of processed meat.

What to eat on Paleo Diet becomes much more clear when looking at a list of recommended paleo foods such as the one that follows. This list is not meant to be all-inclusive, but rather to give an idea of the large variety of allowed foods on this diet plan.

Foods Allowed

 

    • Meats: Grass-fed beef, natural-fed pork and poultry, chicken, goose or duck eggs, other wild bird eggs, rabbit or goat meat. Wild game to include alligator, buffalo, deer, wild boar, wild turkey, pheasant, rattlesnake, quail, elk, moose, kangaroo and ostrich.
    • Fish and shellfish: Cod, bluefish, trout, tuna and salmon. At least 30 other types of commercially available fish are also on this list. Locally available fish and seafood are also allowed on the paleo diet, such as catfish and sardines. The shellfish list is equally as long, including abalone, clams, oysters, mussels, scallops and shrimp. Basically, any edible sea creatures are part of this diet.
    • Fruits and vegetables: This is a huge category, consisting of hundreds of choices of both fruits and vegetables. These make up the main items of what to eat on a paleo diet. Fruits include blueberries, apples, cantaloupe, apricots, pears, figs, pineapple, lemons, oranges, rhubarb, pomegranates and plums. Vegetables include lettuce, tomatoes, cabbage, parsnips, onions, eggplant, celery, carrot, peppers of all kinds, beets and pumpkin.
  • Nuts and seeds: These are best eaten in the raw unsalted form. The list includes pistachios, almonds, brazil nuts, walnuts, macadamia nuts, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, cashews and hazelnuts among many others.

Guidelines for the Paleo Diet

When planning out a daily menu, the general guidelines are healthy grass-fed meats or wild game, almost all fish, shellfish, fruits and vegetables as well as nuts and seeds. This general statement covers the main focus of what to eat on the Paleo Diet. 

I have to be honest my review of this diet leaves a lot of questions about sustainability, but I am a firm believer in trying everything the way it’s stated and see what results come to live.
