This year marks my 32nd year on earth and for my birthday (Bawn Day) I will do something for myself as well as others. Most years I go out to dinner or the Salon but this year I had what I think would be a good idea for all involved. I have been blogging for over 3 years now and I have met some very talented Jamaica and BVI Designers, that I believe should be huge one day, so for my B-day, I am going to highlight some designers that are so “rocking it”.
Living outside of Jamaica it was quite difficult to obtain real quality Jamaican products and or designer pieces. My first experience with any designer was with Jamaican Jae Jolly, I got from her a High Waisted Super Wide Leg Chiffon Pants in Coral, for a Christmas Party in the BVI.
Through that experience, I went a hunting to find more talented young designers in order to do full complete look that would exude my own personal style as I am totally sold on #BrandJamaica and #BuyJamaica. The criteria used to choose these designers was originality, small to medium size growing business and their products HAD to be, for the most part, Jamaican-based.
Listed below are all the Instagram pages of the persons involved. From their IG accounts, you can view products, get WhatsApp numbers and place orders. Let’s get right into it.
@Macs_Couture Mom and Daughter duo did my outfit, Melisha and Mary. They respond promptly to DM’s on Instagram and makes the necessary steps to exchange WhatsApp numbers and start a dialogue from there. Melisha is a vibrant upcoming designer and is dubbed the Pink Boss for her love of the colour Pink. I had the opportunity to go shopping with her for supplies and she was described as being fun and warm by her vendors. Mary, Melisha’s mom is the powerhouse behind the over all executions of the designs, with over 20 years of experience under her belt she quickly states Melisha is learning from her guidance. Mary and Melisha has a new swimwear collection out now for Summer 2015 that is all the rave and is very much in keeping with the standards of Dream Weekend, Sandz and the Igloos of the season. They not only do Swimwear they are the complete package for what to wear to your event. Look out for more original items from Macs Couture by following their Instagram account.
@DanaEdwardsDesigns is owned by namesake Dana Edwards. Vibrant, creative and talented are just a few words to describe the pieces she has created. Dana was approached this year to be a part of Pulse Caribbean Fashion Week as one of their upcoming new designers, she will be showcasing her wares on Tuesday, June 3rd, 2015, follow her IG page for further details. Speaking to Dana she will tell you,
“I don’t want to be recognised as a Jamaican designer I want to be recognised as designer who creates ‘Quality pieces’ and be on par with International Clothing Designers”
@Ruffcutzsandals is owned by a little Rasta Chick named Camille. I met this creative naturalista on my vacation last year to Jamaica and opted to buy her One Strap, Lilly In the Pond and Rebellion Sandals instead of the over $12,000 JA ($120US) for Bridget’s Sandals I had planned to spend. Her Sandals are done to order and completely customisable, the bases are thick and sturdy. You have the option for your Lilly, the choice of 4 colours of your liking to create the flower that drops right on top of your toes. Camille is located in a little spot inside the Western Union outlet in the Clock Tower Mall between the hours of 3 pm – 7 pm, Mondays – Saturdays. She also has a show coming up on Saturday, June 6, 2015, at the Edna Manley School of Performing Arts, Textiles Department that will showcase her new sandals and her talent on a whole.
@2qutecollections custom made a “Bawn Natural” clutch for me. Yes, said it “Custom Made”. Andrea took photos I sent to her, created a unique original image and incorporated the image on a one of a kind Clutch. She was very patient with all the changes I made and boy was I picky and indecisive. For this Summer 2015 season Andrea has designed a few Beach Motive bags that are bright, colourful and “unbeachable” They are double folded with the option of straps and of course also available in her signature Large Clutch. My favourites so far are ‘KIBBA YUH MOUTH” “I AM KIND OF A BIG DEAL” and her “INSTAGRAM BAG”
Find @2quteCollections on Instagram today and take a look at her statement clutches she will work out what you need to your satisfaction
@SiwatuJewlery owned by Husband and wife duo Sentwali “Siwatu” and Ashenasi Abayomi they specialise in hand-crafted copper and Silver jewellery. I have been eyeing Sentwali’s products now for about a year. She has some very trendy midi rings, bangles and neckpieces all crafted by her and from products found here in Jamaica. You can order from their website, have it shipped to you or delivered to your home or office for Kingston residents only. After your order is placed, an email will beset with the total and instructions of what happens next, she will call to confirm delivery time and place, amount and pretty much work through any kinks you might have had while placing order, and I must add this is very trendy affordable jewellery.
@Trueshadescostmetics was formed by Dianne Plummer a young woman who lived in Finland completing studies in chemical engineering. While there she faced the issue of being unable to find proper makeup for her skin tone and liking, she decided then to utilise her skills to alleviate her makeup frustrations in the Northern Europe reagion, hence True Shades Cosmetics was born. This product is completely vegan very light weight and goes on really smooth. The key is blend blend blend. I have reviewed this product and it is in line with your Mac, Iman and Black Opals, so “Naturally” Dianne would make it on my list. I am looking forward to taking the pics so you all can see.
Thats all folks……..Stay tuned to my IG Page @ethnicurls to see the final pieces for my Birthday look. Until then
